How AI amplified a council’s emergency response

Fast, accurate information is critical in a civil defence emergency. When extreme weather caused damage, downed trees, road closures and power failures in Hurunui, the District Council produced essential situation reports in minutes with AI meeting tool Contented.  

Compiling real-time emergency intelligence and response planning typically takes hours, when every second matters for the local community. With the Contented app, Hurunui council's emergency controller recorded meetings on her phone and produced situation reports in a standardised format for regional and national offices in 10 minutes.

Nobody had planned for this use case. 

Contented was introduced as an efficiency multiplier across governance - tackling the time-consuming manual processes for meeting minutes, administration and documentation that kept staff from meaningful work.

As council CEO Hamish Dobbie says:
